Working Together for Kyle
By Mayor pro tem, Michelle Lopez
It is my continued commitment to the families of Kyle that has encouraged me to run for Mayor in the upcoming special election on February 13, 2010. Over the last three years I have served you as your council member, and Mayor pro tem for the last two years. This unique opportunity has allowed me to personally know the needs of our citizens and effectively take action to address those needs.
As Mayor, I am committed to Working Together for Kyle. Three years ago, I believed that, “Kyle is poised to become the rising star of Hays County,” as mentioned in my candidate statement. Today, I am certain that Kyle has achieved that status and has opened the door for future opportunities.
Currently, our nation is experiencing economic challenges and this is directly affecting many Kyle families.
Thus, it is critical for municipal government to provide effective city programs and services in an efficient and affordable manner, while meeting the demands of our growth. Most recently, I collaborated with Mayor Gonzalez, city staff and the city attorney to bring forth a debt management plan for the city council to review and consider for adoption. This is an example of the type of policy decision-making in which city council should be engaged, ensuring that taxpayers are not overburdened with their “fair” share.
As a new mother, homeowner and active member of the community, I share many of the same concerns that you, my fellow neighbors, have about roadways, taxes, employment and quality of life. This is why I have taken an active role in developing our city’s strategic plan, promoting economic development, initiating the city’s legislative priorities, ensuring fiscal responsibility and requesting citizen participation during my term of office.
I chose to run for city council so that I could partner with citizens, providing a voice either individually at one of my Council Chats or collectively through one of our city-wide neighborhood meetings. I will continue my commitment to host regular “Chats” with community members, as I have done the last three years.
Additionally, I serve as Chair of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee, a member of both the Library and Recreation Building Committees, and hold the distinction of the only council member to have completed the Kyle Leadership Academy, designed to educate citizens about all facets of city government. I also hold the positions of executive board member for the United Way of Hays County and President of both the Ladies Altar Society at St. Anthony Marie Claret Catholic Church and the Austin Alumnae Panhellenic Association.
As Mayor, I believe in Working Together for Kyle, so that members of the community have a voice, are confident in the city’s leadership and share in Kyle’s future prosperity. Your support for Michelle López as your Mayor will ensure that Kyle continues to meet the needs of all our families.
